LCP làm nhiệm vụ kiểm tra chất lượng đường truyền.
NCP làm nhiệm vụ chọn lựa và cấu hình các giao thức lớp mạng
Trong thành phần của PPP, có một layer nằm dưới cả LCP và NCP. Đó là HDLC. HDLC này không phải là HDLC L2 của Cisco.
